Hardware
Senior Optical Display Engineer
You will work on the optical system from lab validation through manufacturable product decisions. The work includes brightness, contrast, field of view, eye box, thermal behavior, comfort, alignment, and how the display performs across real environments.
What you will build
- Evaluate waveguide, combiner, projector, and micro-display tradeoffs against product constraints.
- Define measurement plans for brightness, uniformity, color, distortion, eye box, and comfort.
- Partner with industrial design and mechanical teams on weight, fit, thermal limits, and packaging.
- Drive vendor reviews, prototype evaluation, and reliability criteria for optical components.
What you bring
- 6+ years in optical engineering, display systems, AR/VR hardware, imaging, cameras, or advanced consumer electronics.
- Experience with optical measurement, tolerance analysis, lab instrumentation, and vendor collaboration.
- Strong grasp of brightness, FOV, MTF, color, distortion, stray light, and thermal constraints.
- Ability to document clear test plans and translate lab results into product decisions.
Nice to have
- Experience with Zemax, Code V, LightTools, MATLAB, Python, or custom optical analysis tooling.
- Experience bringing optical systems from prototype to mass production.
- Experience with wearable ergonomics, prescription compatibility, or outdoor visibility.
Remote setup
This role is fully remote. We work async-first with written specs, weekly product reviews, focused lab blocks, and planned travel for hardware bring-up, field testing, and team sessions when needed.
Process
Intro call, portfolio or technical review, practical work session, founder conversation with Marvin Huelsmann, and offer. We keep the process direct and aim to finish within two weeks.
